Ground-source cooling: Challenges and opportunities for the cities of tomorrow!

Increasing heat stress, particularly in urban areas, is leading to a rising demand for cooling in buildings, for which shallow geothermal energy offers a sustainable and energy-efficient solution. This technology utilizes geothermal probes to cool buildings in the summer by dissipating excess heat into the ground. A key feature of these systems is that this heat, stored during the summer, is available again during the heating season. This year's event will demonstrate how this technology can make a significant contribution to sustainable urban development in light of the considerably increasing number of cooling degree days. Furthermore, current trends and developments, as well as showcase projects, will be presented. The event is organized by GeoSphere Austria, the Austrian Geothermal Association, and the City of Vienna.

separatus with on-site presentation

Benjamin Pernter contributes to the program with an exciting topic:

From cooling load to optimal probe planning with separatus®: Lessons Learned from a bank project

We present a project directly from real-world practice. During the renovation of a bank building in the Vorarlberg Rhine Valley (Austria), cooling ultimately proved to be a crucial design factor. We share lessons learned from the planning process, such as:

  • How adjusting the probe depth can improve efficiency in systems with a high cooling load.
  • How this can optimize the overall probe length and thus reduce investment costs.
  • How separatus has contributed to further cost savings.

Participation in the Vienna Geothermal Day is free of charge – however, the organizers request registration at www.geothermie-oesterreich.at/erdwärmetag/
